What can I do to reassure my child if they are worried about going to the toilet again?
Once your child’s constipation has been relieved, there are some measures that you can take to try and stop it from happening again in the future.
If your little one had stopped going to the toilet because they were anxious about being in pain, it is important to try and reduce any stress of anxiety that they might have developed when going to the toilet. Being positive and encouraging about a toilet routine is important and can help your little one to feel better. Giving them plenty of time to go to the bathroom, or introducing a reward system associated with going to the toilet, may also work. If the problem doesn’t go away, your health visitor or family doctor may be able to provide some further advice.
Regular exercise can also greatly reduce the risk of your child getting constipation. As it is also effective at reducing the risk of constipation in adults too, building some time into the day where you can all exercise is a great way of making sure the whole family can maintain good fitness levels together and help avoid any further bouts.
