Fitting smoke alarms in your home and making sure they are tested regularly is also important. The fire service offers a free fire safety check of homes, including a standard smoke alarm assessment. If you do not have one, they may also be able to fit one for you free of charge. The fire service will also be able to advise you on the best way to leave your house in the event of a fire emergency.

Scalds and burns are common accidents that affect children. It is important to keep kettles and hot drinks well away from children, as their skin is much more sensitive than that of an adult. If you are cooking anything with hot water, or frying anything with hot oil, always make sure your child is away from the cooking area. When bathing your little one, be sure to check the temperature of the water with your elbow to make sure it isn’t too hot for them. It’s also a good idea to put cooler water into the bottom of the bath rather than hot water first. If you are using electrical appliances such as an iron, curling tongs or hair straighteners, make it a habit to unplug them after each use and keep them out of reach, including the cord.
